Frequently Asked Questions
The Roadway Weather Information System (RWIS) website is a business intelligent (BI) tool used to visualize and graph the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) weather data. The system is a statewide application for weather system monitoring that has access to current and historical data stored in the ITS data warehouse.
The Traffic Management Data Dictionary (TMDD) Standards were developed to support Center-to-Center (C2C) communications as part of a regional deployment of ITS. This standard allows the Trafic Operations Centers (TOC), Regional Operation Centers (ROCs), and Traffic Management Centers (TMCs) to cooperate in the management of a freeway or roadway during congestion, incidents (crashes) events, and weather.

The TMDD standard provides the dialogs, message sets, data frames, and data elements to manage the shared use of these devices and the regional sharing of data and incident management responsibility. The TMDD standards often reference elements of the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation System Protocol (NTCIP) standards, but deal with the devices at a higher level of abstraction.
The Nevada Data Exchange (NDEX) is the name of the NDOT ITS data warehouse where all ITS data is stored and archived.
A dynamic legend is a legend that can remove a value from the graph within a subset of data to focus on a particular value. In this particular case, it could be gust speeds and all other values can be removed by “clicking off” the other values in the legend.
The NDEX RWIS website displays weather sensor data in five (5) minute increments for data within the last 24-hours, hourly increments within for (30) days, and daily increments beyond thirty (30) days.
  1. Features:
    1. Map View:The landing page for the website is a map view with rwis icons with the nearest camera embedded into the rwis icon flag.
    2. Table View: The table view provides a list of all RWIS locations and weather data for each site in a table.
    3. Drop Down List: A drop down list with a search feature is available to find an RWIS / ESS sensor.
    4. Date: A date range drop down calendar is available to adjust the current or historical date parameters for the RWIS /ESS station
    5. Temperature and Speed Graph: This graph displays the temperature and wind speeds of different weather devices types, if available in these two formats. The period is limited to the last 24 hours.
